Grinding coffee for non-espresso brewing at home is a pain in the tits. Short of finding space and the budget for a shop grinder your choices are limited and there a lots of concessions. When the Mahlkonig Vario arrived it was lauded as a grinder which could deliver a quality filter grind, and an espresso grind and sing and dance and do everything in between. Its performance grinding for brewed coffee left an awful lot to be desired.

For the past few months, however, on a daily basis I have been brewing filter coffee with a Mahlkonig Vario. The results have been excellent. The difference, notably is that the stock ceramic burrs have been replaced by a set of steel burrs designed specifically to produce a coarse grind. (more…)

Some lighter blog fair this time. As the annual gift giving orgy is a mere [insert number] days away, there’s an increased level of discourse about what to buy. I’ve seen a lot of “what espresso machine should I buy for under €100?”, “anywhere sell that civet coffee?” etc. An awful lot of money will be poorly spent on shit (sometimes literally) coffee gifts this Christmas. So I thought I’d put together ten items, covering a variety of price points, of things that I would be happy to give or receive.

New York

New York

Having recently returned from New York I thought it might be a nice idea to write a few words about the coffee ‘scene’ there. Well, that’s as much as I had written when I started to write this article several weeks ago. The trip is now only recent if we’re speaking in terms of seasons or longer. It’s been so long, Dave has even stopped asking me how it’s coming along. He hasn’t stopped writing snarky remarks about me on boards.ie as one of my colleagues pointed out to me the other day.
